Cal. Court of Appeals Reverses $2.5 Million Retaliation Verdict Against LAUSD

On 3/27/25, in an unpublished opinion in Camp v. Los Angeles Unified School District, the California Court of Appeals reversed a judgment awarding $2.5 million to a former LAUSD principal (Owensmouth Continuation High School), who claimed violation of whistleblower retaliation statute (Labor Code 1102.5) after he raised concerns over how federal funds were distributed among schools under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, found at 20 U.S.C. § 6301, et seq.  The Court of Appeals found that the principal had failed to establish that he had reasonable cause to believe that officials’ actions violated the law, an essential element of his claim.
