Supreme Court Stays District Court Injunction Ordering Trump Administration to Reinstate Probationary Federal Workers

On 4/8/25, in U.S Office of Personnel Mgmt. v. American Fed. of Govt. Employees, AFL-CIO, et al., the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 6-3 majority ruling, issued an Order staying District Court Judge William Alsup's order granting injunctive relief and ordering the Trump administration to rehire thousands of recently hired probationary federal workers while litigation continues. The effect of the ruling will be limited, as a separate lawsuit is currently pending in the district court in Maryland. In that case, District Court Judge James Bredar had also ordered the Trump administration to reinstate thousands of public probation workers at 18 federal agencies, but only if they live or work in 19 states that sued over the Trump administration over the firings.
